Bédélys Independent Submissions

I have my own publishing house. Are my comics admissible for the Bédélys independents awards?
Collectives or independent publishing houses that publish an author’s catalog are not eligible. However, if you handle all the production stages of your books yourself, and publish only your own work, they may be admissible. Please write to us to confirm.

My comic was created in 2023 but only printed in 2024. Is it admissible?
Yes, we consider the year of first printing as the year of publication. Reprints are not admissible.

I’ve added content to my comic that I’ve re-edited and republished this year. Is it admissible?
For a re-edition to be accepted, there must be at least 50% new material that has never been published before. If in doubt, please write to us to confirm.

My comic is a collaboration with several artists, a third of whom are from Quebec. Is it admissible?
No, the comic must have been created by 50% or more of admissible artists. For three authors, two of the three must meet the following criteria:
– be Canadian citizens or permanent residents within the meaning of section 2 (1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
– ordinarily reside in Quebec and have resided there for the past 12 months.

My comic has been published in issues, and I’d like to submit all the issues as a volume. Is this possible?
Yes, in the context of independent Bédélys, a work is considered whole when it constitutes a story in sequential art, which is transmitted by a physical medium, and submitted in its entirety for evaluation. This means that it’s up to the artist to decide what he or she considers to be the whole work. In this case, if an issue was published in 2023 and the volume was created in 2024, all issues of the volume are admissible.

My comic has been published in issues, and I’d like to submit each issue individually for review.
In this case, if the artist submits two issues published in 2024, they will be evaluated individually and not as a whole, unless otherwise specified.
A form must be completed for each issue.

I published my comic in 2023 and its translation in 2024. Is my translation admissible for the Bédélys?
Yes, if you did the translation.

I live outside Quebec, but I made my zine while living in Quebec. Is my comic admissible?
To be admissible, the author, or at least 50% of the authors must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents within the meaning of section 2 (1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. In both cases, the artist must be ordinarily resident in Quebec and have resided there for the past 12 months. So, no, if you no longer reside in Quebec, you’re not admissible.

I self-published my webcomic. The content was put online in 2023, but the print publication was not made until 2024. Is it admissible?
Yes, webcomics that are published for the first time in print are admissible, even if the content was published online in a previous year.

Can I get back the copies sent for my submission to the Bédélys independents?
No, whether you are a finalist or not, the copies submitted remain the property of MCAF.

Can I submit more than one comic?
Yes, there is no limit to the number of comics you can submit per year.
A form must be completed for each submission.
