In Montreal and other cities across Canada and the world, there is a palpable housing crisis, with the notion of cheap rents quickly becoming a seeming oxymoron. How are gentrification, housing scarcity, and the changing face of urban life affecting comic book creators? From the increasingly difficult search for affordable living and working space to the varied ways that artists respond to changing conditions in the city and seek to build communities, the housing crisis and the increasing cost of living has touched almost every element of the working lives of comic book creators. Rick Trembles (Gesticulating Gentrification), Shaghayegh Moazzami (Les coquelicots de Ridgewood), and Eleanor Hannon (Citymouse), who have all tackled the housing crisis in their work, discuss this deeply of-the-moment topic.
