Strangefruit (Tarah Paul)

Canada

Co-host of the podcast La Nouvelle École des Surdoués, Strangefruit is versatile. Afrofeminist, project manager, photographer, model and spare-time podcaster, Strangefruit has loved comics and superheroes since she was little – just like her co-hosts, AlfredsonJr and The Voice. Captain Marvel, Legion and Catwoman are her favorite superheroes. She describes herself as a "comic book and superheroes enthusiast". Launched in 2018, La Nouvelle École des Surdoués is a podcast hosted by Alfredson Jr (Andy), Strangefruit (Tarah) and The Voice (Patrick). Fanatics since they were little and inspired by their geek debates outside the cinema doors, these three millennial friends discuss everything related to comics and superheroes in popular culture. Each episode, whether it's on the latest comic book, the latest film or episode of Marvel or DC, is filled with dynamism and humour, while offering a critical eye. Since the beginning of the podcast, the co-hosts have been committed to providing a platform and visibility to local Black and racialized artists. Thus, this podcast lists a multitude of interviews with cosplayers, authors, illustrators and comic book store owners from Montreal, but also from the rest of Canada. Every year, as part of Black History Month, they highlight authors, illustrators, and also comics created by people of African descent. Over the years, La Nouvelle École des Surdoués has also been called upon to address the issue of diversity and representation in comics and in popular superhero culture, for example for the media, including CBC News and Global News. In 2022, La Nouvelle École des Surdoués was invited to host their very first panel at Montreal ComicCon. In 2023, the podcast was nominated in the “Podcast of the Year” category for the Dynastie Gala.
