Cesario Lavery (he/him/his) is an educator, illustrator, comics-maker, textile dabbler, and occasional violinist. His editorial illustrations have appeared in the Montreal Review of Books, THIS Magazine, Briarpatch, Shameless Magazine, and more. Cesario has received grants from the Museum of Jewish Montreal and the Canada Council for the Arts for his graphic memoir/biography, Der Eydes ("The Witness"). Der Eydes follows the story of Polish-Canadian psychiatrist Dr Chaim Shatan, a founder of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder diagnosis, and digs into the forgotten legacy of Shatan's parents - Bundist activists and prolific Yiddish writers - as well as Lavery's own ancestry. Der Eydes ("The Witness") is an exploration of family history, family mystery, and the long shadows cast by war and trauma.
