ONE-DAY SEMINAR ON THE COMIC ARTS IN QUEBEC MAY 26, 2017
To continue the process started on April 7 and to allow all the parties to exchange and reflect on the current situation of the comic arts in Quebec. The Montreal Comic Arts Festival, in association with the Quebec City Francophone Comic Book Festival, invites everyone involved in the comic arts industry to participate in a first seminar to reflect and discuss. This event will take place at Espace Art Neuf, 3819 Calixa-Lavallée, Montreal, on May 26, 2017.
A number of topics will be discussed, including an overview of the Quebec comic book scene, how local media promotes comic books, building awareness for Quebec artists and creators, a professional look at the comic book creation process, comic book publishing in Quebec and the historical value of local comic books.

Current media practices, increasing awareness of comic books within media, educating critics on how to properly review comic books, promoting local success stories, etc.

Building awareness locally and outside Quebec, key promotional events for comic books in Quebec, integration of comic books within general literary events, important prizes and awards for the Quebec comic book industry, etc.
Group C — Overview of the Quebec Comic Book Industry
What constitutes a “Quebec Comic Book” and a “Quebec Comic Book Creator”? Differences between French and English creators, publishers and audiences, impact of digital distribution, situation of comic books in schools.

Group A — A Professional Look at the Comic Book Creation Process
Situation of creators, payment practices and royalties, association and representation, legal protection, financial support, breaking into the industry, etc.
Group B — Comic Book Publishing in Quebec
Sources of financial support in Quebec and Canada, short-, medium- and long-term development, promotional and distribution challenges in Quebec and abroad, concerted projects and initiatives, etc.
Group C — Historical Value of Quebec Comic Books
Conservation of Quebec comic books, promoting the history of comic books, new editions of important works in print or in the digital space, recognizing comic books as literature, interactions between comic books and other literary creations, comic books as multimedia or performance art, critical awareness and review of comic books, etc.
